Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

An Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

Often, parents ask how to know when a child is going through the various stages of early brain development. The truth is that each child is different. What you can do to promote healthy development is to encourage learning from a young age. Join Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legends, Texas as we talk about brain development and how you can promote a real desire for learning in your child.

    The process vs. the result

Similar to a journey, the process of learning is far more valuable and exciting than the result. Your child learns so much more from figuring out how to achieve a particular result than he or she can from the result itself. This is true in almost all early education, so remember, do not force your child into understanding the end of a process without actually enjoying its intricacies.

    Learning through examples

You will notice during the early years that your child will learn a lot more and at a faster pace if he or she has examples from which to learn. The development of strong neural pathways in the brain occurs during the first five years of your child’s life. Therefore, parents should ensure that they offer their children activities at home that can support this development. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legends in Spring, Texas, we share the following information to promote reading in preschool children, so that this learning can reinforce these neural pathways.

    Oral phonics

One activity that you can try with your preschooler is to have your child spell and sound out different words. This can be a great learning activity. Your child will make mistakes along the way, but with your loving support and guidance he or she can continue learning without frustration. This will add to the enjoyment of the activity and encourage your child to learn about language and reading.

    First-hand practice

Another fun activity is encouraging your preschooler to try reading words on everyday items, like cereal boxes and signs. This is an effective way for a child to learn about the written word, and how words can appear in different fonts and colors. This can also promote reading in a fun way, since the child is familiar with these items.

    Read with your child

Offer your child a variety of age appropriate books and let him or her choose one for you to read together. Even if your child wants to read the same book every night, this will provide your child with confidence and a sense of control. In fact, repetition has been shown to be beneficial for developing reading skills.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legends in Spring, Texas promotes effective learning by making every activity fun and engaging. This, coupled with our AdvancED™ accredited program, gives your child an academic edge that forms the foundation for advanced learning. We offer top quality child care services. The first few years of your child’s life are the most crucial when it comes to brain development. Our Brain Waves™ Curriculum at Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legends is the best thing you can offer your child. We know how important it is for your child to fullydevelop the brain as he or she grows. We dedicate all our time to ensuring that each child is taught using methods that will stimulate brain development.

What our Brain Waves™ Curriculum offers

Our program supports neural pathways for language, social-emotional and cognitive development. Our philosophy “Hug First, Then Teach” allows us to teach your child in a safe and loving environment, because emotional attachment is vital for your child’s brain development. Our learning stations in Legends are filled with materials that allow for maximum brain stimulation. We let each child explore through sight, sound and smell. Information is sent directly to the brain through these sensory experiences, allowing your child’s brain to grow healthy and strong. We believe in a safe and nurturing learning environment. Our goal is to provide stimulating experiences that will support brain development.

Five facts to know about the brain

    1. The brain produces 800 neurological connections for every second it is properly stimulated.
    2. At birth the brain will have 100 billion neurons, but only 17% are activated.
    3. The brain activates from the bottom to the top and from the back to the front.
    4. Repetition is key to brain development. The more times a child hears a correct answer the stronger the neural pathway.
    5. Age-appropriate activities promote sensory stimulation and provide healthy brain growth.

For your infant to grow and develop normally, he or she needs proper nutrition and good eating habits. You may be concerned about how much or how little your infant is eating and if he or she is eating normally. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine if your infant’s food intake is enough for proper development.

There are no rules, just guidelines

When you infant is born, he or she can only eat a teaspoon of milk since his or her stomach is so small. Therefore, your baby will need to eat frequently during the early months. There is not any set rule for how much your infant should be eating. Instead of trying to use an absolute amount or length of time for feedings, you should look for signs that your infant is eating enough. The signs to watch out for every day include gaining about one-half ounce to one ounce of weight, urinating frequently enough to have at least six wet diapers, and having two or three soft bowel movements.

A typical range of feeding, if you are breast feeding, is around ten feedings per day, including at least one at night. Since each baby is different, yours could be eating more or less, therefore simply watch for any changes in his or her pattern.

If you are bottle feeding your infant, the typical range is about three or four ounces at a time during the first month, and then an additional one ounce per month up to eight ounces. Again, your infant’s amounts may vary but watch for any change in his or her pattern.

Acquiring math skills at a young age is an important skill for children. Even with calculators and computers being so prevalent, it is still important that children learn these skills. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legends, we have been running a successful child care center with a curriculum that includes a brain development program. Math skills are an integral part of child brain development and therefore a prominent part of our program. Below are some tips on how to inspire your child to enjoy math at home and in preschool.

    Make it fun

Finding fun math inspired games is a good way to start the process. These games can require some counting in which your child can use his fingers, a counting toy or even a child’s calculator. A fun game we recommend is the card game UNO. This is a game the entire family will enjoy.

    Start early

Start your child early to learn about and get comfortable with math. Your child needs to understand the concept of numbers and counting before he can begin to learn. Here are some ways to begin to teach your child:

    • When you are preparing breakfast, you can count eggs or pancakes or berries. This is a fun and simple way to teach young children how to count.
    • Using a box or any other shape of object, teach them how to count the sides of the box or picture frame or whatever. This will also teach them about shapes.

    Set a good example

Be confident when you are helping your child with all their math tasks. Have a positive attitude, and show your child how math is present in daily life, such as finding the channels on the TV remote or dialing a phone number. Every day there are small ways to teach your young child about numbers.

For older children, helping them understand that math is all around us, in technology, medicine, business. Remind your child about the different professions that require math skills such as being a teacher or an architect.

Is TV really as bad for kids as people say? How much is too much? And how do you minimize the time spent in front of the television, especially during school holidays?

Why is TV bad for kids?

One of the reasons parents worry about what kids are watching on television is the content. Not surprising, an estimated 61% of American programming contains violence, and the average child spends more than six hours daily watching television. This combination of factors has been linked to aggressive behavior and sleep disturbances in children.

    How much is too much?

The general guidelines for television watching are different for each childhood age group, with babies younger than two years having a maximum of 30 minutes daily, while other childhood experts say that no television at all is best. For toddlers there should be a maximum of two hours of television watching per day.

    How to minimize television time:

Having a child passively watch television for extended time has been known to hinder brain development. A child's first five years are an essential time when cognitive growth is rapid and can be impacted by problematic influences such as television over-exposure. Choose one or two educational, child-friendly programs and allow your child to watch only those shows. Find other activities to substitute for television. A few ideas for continuing to learn during school holidays, but also having fun include:

    • Creative activities such as painting and drawing
    • Learning about wildlife by visiting the zoo
    • Building a pillow fort
    • Exploring the backyard or a local park with others
    • Joining a sports team
    • Enrolling in summer camp

At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Legends, we understand the crucial learning milestones and brain development for children during their first five years. We offer a range of programs for children of all ages and have the philosophy for children that they should be "hugged first, then taught." Contact us today to learn more about our nature-themed summer camp program and information about enrollment for your child's best summer ever!
